  1. Check to make sure your thesis statement is debatable and specific;
  2. Make sure each body paragraph has ample evidence, often quoted from outside sources; and
  3. Ensure you have transitional words and phrases between each paragraph.

1. Thesis Statements: The most important part of the essay, your thesis statement succinctly articulates the main insight that you will develop in the course of your essay. It must be debatable. No one wants to read six pages in which you argue something that is non-debatable! It must also be as precise as possible. Writing a good thesis statement is crucial for writing a good essay.


2. Evidence: Academic writing, like a good lawyerly argument in court, is build upon bringing evidence forward for your reader. For college and university writing, this means that each body paragraph should have a main idea (the point), which is supported by evidence and analysis. Sometimes this structure is called the PEA or PEE paragraph, for point-evidence-analysis or point-evidence-explanation.


3. Transitions: Essays and other forms of academic and popular writing flows logically from one idea to the next. In order to sign post and indicate the logical connections between ideas, we must use transitional words and phrases. It is important to know how to use transition words in essays to be able to show what makes one idea related to another.
